YILANKALE (SNAKE) CASTLE
It is on a hill which rises abruptly from a plain
between Misis and Ceyhan.
It was the first of a chain of castles on the Silk
Road.
The castle is popularly called Sahmeran Castle.
Popular tradition says that a snake charmer named
Seyh Meran used to raise snakes in the castle.
KOZAN CASTLE
This was the fourth castle in the castle chain.
It was originally an Assyrian castle called Sis
Castle after the name of the city.
The castle was restored after control of the city
of Sis changed hands.
ANAVARZA CASTLE
The destiny of the old city of Anavarza was tied
to this castle high on a hell. It can only be reached
from the west. It has a view of the iskenderun Gulf
and other castles.
It is not known for sure when and by whom it was
built, although it was probably built in the 9th
century B.C. by the Assyrians. |
