AIt lived periods of Persian, Selev-kos Rome,
Byzantine, Muslim Arabs, Seljuk Turks.
In Antique ages, It was known as "Magarsus"
ant after Middle ages. It's name was "karatas",After
this, Seljuks, Crusaders, Ramazanogullan occupied
it one by one and then it became a county in 1517.
It has got a seaside to Medi ter-rancan sea and
some villages of Karatas bounded to Yuregir.
There is one Town and 46 villa-ged. In 2000, population
is 32.375. and 9.189 of them in the center, others
in the villages.
The old Karatas which is known "Magarsus"
is on the hillon which there is a tower, 5 kms
far from in the west Karatas shore was announced
"center of Tourism", by the council
of Ministers in, July, 11.1998.
