This is one of Adana's two nicest shoreline
districts. The ancient history of Ayas/Aegeae isn't
known, but in the Hellenistic period, it was famous
with its Asklepi-on Temple, one of three in the world
(another in
Turkey being in
Bergama).
In the Middle Ages it became a very important harbor
on the Mediterranean.
