There are basically
three springs here. The first is the Great and the Small
Sulfur Thermal Spring Baths; another one flows to Kaynarca
and the Yeni Thermal Springs Baths. The third flows
to the Kara Mustafa Bath; it resembles springs with
iron content and is known as “Silver” spring.
a) Kükürtlü (Sulfur) Hot Springs
The “Bursa Provincial Yearbook” (1927) notes that the
site of the true source is unknown. It issues from beneath
the Tomb of Hatice Sultan. It has been determined that
the water is siphoned off to other places, also and
that the owners of the businesses using this ill-gotten
water reserve it in a well that they dug in proximity
to the Women's Section of the Thermal Springs Baths
and draw it up by an engine and combine it with the
main spring water The temperature of the hot spring
water at the point where it is divided has been measured
at 82° Centigrade. The water smells of rotten eggs.
b) The Source
of the Yeni Thermal Springs: The source of this
sulfurous spring that flows to the baths of Kaynarca
and Yeni Thermal Springs lies eighty centimeters below
the ground surface beneath the high
rocks at the point
where the road that descends from Bademli Garden to
Yeni Thermal Springs Baths branches off to Kaynarca.
The temperature at this point is 86° Centigrade. A portion
of the water goes to Kaynarca Bath and one portion goes
to Yeni Thermal Springs Baths. Its rate of flow is 9.7
It./sec. or 129 masura. Chemical analysis of this water
which is sulfurous, is distinct from the others.
c) Kara Mustafa Thermal Springs:
It supplies water to the Kara Mustafa Public Bath located
on the Bursa-Mudanya road. The combined rate of flow of the
three springs that reaches Kara Mustafa is 6.2 It./sec., or
28 masura. Two of the springs that flow to this bath are hot
and one is cold. The source of the hot springs-whose temperature
measures at 55° Centigrade-has been identified. The water
is odorless; when cooled it may be drunk like ordinary water.
Because it is crystal clear it is known as “Silver” water.
The content of the water includes traces of iron. It is thought
to possess radioactivity. There are two other springs in the
vicinity of Bademli Garden. One is a hot spring that flows
to Bekarlar Bath and the other is an open spring in the garden
of Debbag Esref Bey. “Bursa Provincial Yearbook” states that
in 1927 this spring was. unchanneled. Dr. Bernard, in his
work on the thermal springs of Bursa, mentions a spring called
“Sacred Spring for Eyes” (Göz Ayazma) and claims that it was
very beneficial for eyes.
